Clinical Observations in 215 Cases of Burn Patients

Abstract
During the period of 5 years from January 1971 to December, 21975, 215 cases of burn patients were treated at this surgical department of Seoul Adventist Hospital. These 215 cases were reviewed and summarized as follows:
1. The age distribution showed from 2 months old to 72 years old. The highest incidence of age group was under 10 years old: 93 cases (43.2%) Male was affected more frequently than female, the incidence being 144 cases (60.7%) and 71 cases (33.0%). The ratio of male and female was 2 : 1.
2. Seasonal distribution showed that summer was the highest incidence: 67 cases (31.2%) Y
and winter was the least incidence: 42 cases (19.5%).
3. Most cases of burn were scalding (50.2%) and flame (37.2%).
4. The most frequent, period of Interval between accident and arrival to hospital was within 24 hours 170 (79. 1%). The most frequent duration of hospitalization was within 10 days (69.8%).
5. In laboratory data; 122 cases (56.7%) showed hemoconcentration.
6. Predominant group in extent 10~ 19% was 32.6% and 0~9% (27.4%), 20~29% (18.1%). All cases was involved with 2nd-3rd degree of burn.
7. The autograft was performed in 55 cases and the most frequent period of grafting was within 3 weeks (34.5%).
8. The complications of burns were wound infection (26.0%), thrombophlebitis (9.3%), cicatrical contraction (7.4%), genitourinary infections (7.0%) and pulmonary complications (2.3%), etc. in order.
9. In 50 cases of infected the burn wound culture, pseudomonas aeruginosa 32 (64%), stap-hylococcus organisms 11 (22%), E. coli 3 (6%), and the other organisms were ¢¥cultured.
10. The over all mortality rate was 10.0%, causes of death were septicemia (38.0%), burn shock (23.8%), pulmonary, complications (19.0%), renal insufficiency (14.3%), G. I. bleeding (4.8%) in order. The most frequent, period of mortality according to duration after burn
injury was- within 72 hours (52.4%).
